The growing popularity of the design field in general and the awareness of
furnishing and equipping the home environment in particular, supported a
growth of approximately 3% in the industry's income, which amounted to
approximately NIS 6.6 billion. The Israeli consumer is aware of and affected
by worldwide trends and is becoming less conservative than before to the
design of the items he purchases. Among the reasons for the rise in popularity
we can attribute a growth in television presence of content having to do with
designing and renovating the home as well as a rise in the exposure to the
field of investment in real estate.
Nonetheless, the competition in the industry takes its toll, especially among the
small and middle size companies; in April 2013 Shegem Furnishing company
closed after encountering difficulties. In the first months of 2014 Topaz Kitchens,
Ein Harod Furniture and Divani and Design started liquidation proceedings.
We would like to note that about two months after announcing liquidation,
Ein Harod Furniture was bought, in April 2014, by Shomrat Hazorea Furniture
Company from the receiver.
It is estimated that in 2013, the privately owned stores and carpentry shops
comprised most of the industry's income, approximately 56%, NIS 3.7
billion, whereas the income of furniture chains that specialize amounted to
approximately NIS 2.9 billion, approximately 44% of total income.
In 2013 approximately 95 thousand kitchens were sold, comprising almost a
quarter of the industry's sales, a growth of approximately 4% in comparison
to 2012. In addition, living rooms, bedrooms and kid and teenage rooms
comprised, each, approximately 15% of sales.
It is estimated that in 2013 local production was responsible for approximately
75%of total industry income, approximately NIS 4.95 billion. Europe continues
to be the largest source of import, approximately 52% of total import and
Asia is a close second with 42% of import. However, like in other industries,
the dominance of import from China stands out also in the furniture industry,
while in 2013 China alone comprised approximately a third of furniture import
to Israel, approximately $ 157 million.
Northern Birch Ltd which markets Ikea products in Israel is ranked in first
place in the industry this year. The company ended the year with an income
of NIS 880 million, a growth of 14% in comparison to 2012. In March 2014,
the company's third store, on a lot of 24,000 square meters, opened in
Kiryat Ata.
The company ranked in second place, Carmel Holdings ended 2013 with an
income of approximately NIS 233 million, same as 2012. Teknion, from the
Global Israel Group, that deals with office furniture, ended the year with a
decline of approximately 22% from NIS 128 million in 2012 to approximately
NIS 100 million in 2013.
